Breathing 100% Oxygen After Global Brain Ischemia in Mongolian Gerbils Results hi Increased Lipid Peroxidation and Increased Mortality
نویسندگان
چکیده
Exposure of Mongolian gerbils to a 100% oxygen atmosphere after 15 minutes of global brain ischemia resulted in a marked increase in the production of pentane, an in vivo product of lipid peroxidation. Much less pentane production occurred in animals subjected to global brain ischemia then exposed to an air atmosphere and in animals exposed to a 100% oxygen atmosphere without ischemia. Gerbils placed in 100% oxygen for 3-6 hours after 15 minutes of ischemia also had a threefold increase in 14day mortality compared with gerbils subjected to ischemia and then placed in an air atmosphere. These findings raise a serious question about the use of oxygen-enriched atmospheres during reperfusion following ischemia. (Stroke 1987;18:426-430)

We sought to know whether a free radical spin trap agent, alpha-phenyl-N-tert-butyl nitrone (PBN) influences brain cell membrane function and energy metabolism during and after transient global hypoxia-ischemia (HI) in the newborn piglets. Cerebral HI was induced by temporary complete occlusion of bilateral common carotid arteries and simultaneous breathing with 8% oxygen for 30 min, followed b...

This study was done to determine the effects of hypothermia on brain cell membrane function and energy metabolism after transient hypoxia-ischemia (HI) in the newborn piglet. Cerebral HI was induced by temporarily complete occlusion of bilateral common carotid arteries with surgical clips and simultaneous breathing with 8% oxygen for 30 min, followed by release of carotid occlusion and normoxic...
متن کاملExtremely Low Frequency Magnetic Field (50 Hz, 0.5 mT) Reduces Oxidative Stress in the Brain of Gerbils Submitted to Global Cerebral Ischemia
Magnetic field as ecological factor has influence on all living beings. The aim of this study was to determine if extremely low frequency magnetic field (ELF-MF, 50 Hz, 0.5 mT) affects oxidative stress in the brain of gerbils submitted to 10-min global cerebral ischemia. After occlusion of both carotid arteries, 3-month-old gerbils were continuously exposed to ELF-MF for 7 days. Nitric oxide an...

U74006F (21-[4-(2,6-di-1-pyrrolidinyl-4-pyrimidinyl)-1-piperazinyl]-16 alpha-methylpregna-1,4,9(11)-triene-3,20-dione, monomethane sulfonate) is a novel and potent inhibitor of central nervous system tissue lipid peroxidation that is devoid of classical steroid hormonal activities. Its possible efficacy in attenuating postischemic mortality and neuronal necrosis was examined in gerbils followin...
